Position Summary:
Humanity United is seeking an experienced Director, Accounting & Reporting Operations to play a key role in managing accounting, financial operations, and reporting functions for the organization. The Director, Accounting & Reporting Operations manages the day-to-day accounting activities of the organization and is responsible for adherence to accounting principles and organizational policies and procedures.

With a full understanding of HU operations, the Director, Accounting & Reporting Operations exercises sound judgment to evaluate financial processes and make recommendations. The candidate must be a team player with high customer service skillset and willingness to work in a collaborative environment.

This is a full-time, exempt role reporting to the CFO & Treasurer. This role can be based anywhere in the U.S, with a preference for a San Francisco or other Pacific time zone location. Our hybrid work approach provides ongoing flexibility for regular remote work for this position, combined with periodic in-person gatherings (at least four per year).


Core Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Complete the month/quarter/year-end accounting close cycle and produce all official financial statements.
  • Maintain the General Ledger and perform all close activities to include sub-ledger postings, journal entry preparation and GL / bank account reconciliations.
  • Prepare, analyze, report and distribute financial information and supporting schedules in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes to keep senior leadership abreast of HU’s financial status.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for costs, program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Ensure accurate and complete data is maintained within the travel and expense system (Concur), accounting system (Intacct) and budgeting/reporting application (Adaptive). Additionally, ensure and maintain data integrations and integrity between all systems.
  • Assist in the annual budget, quarterly forecast and monthly variance explanation process.
  • Review and approve the bi-weekly payroll processing function (secondary preparer as needed) including posting of the related journal entries.
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Manage the preparation and process of the annual audit and year-end tax returns
  • Prepare monthly reports measuring performance against operating goals and objectives
  • Assist with monthly and ad hoc analysis as needed to inform grant making and other portfolio level decisions.
  • Maintain cash forecast and analysis of cash requirements.
  • Support presentations to the Board and Board committees.
  • Support the risk management function for the organization, including involvement with the annual insurance renewal process.
  • Manage, coach and develop two professional accounting staff.
  • In partnership with the accounting staff, ensure all payables are processed accurately, timely and in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal processes.
  • Provide assistance to the CFO as it relates to financial operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must-have requirements:
  • BA/BS in Accounting, with significant experience as Accounting Manager or Controller with General Ledger and Financial Statement responsibility
  • Excellent attention to detail coupled with a high degree of accuracy
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable, general ledger & payroll
  • Must have solid understanding of GAAP and the ability to research and implement new accounting standards
  • Must be proficient in advanced Excel
  • Strong work ethic, integrity and impeccable professionalism

  • Keen analytic, organizational and problem solving skills with a focus on strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting. Ability to analyze financials and search for potential recording errors, variances, and trends in performance. 
  • Strong verbal and communication skills
  • Experience in effectively communicating key data, with the ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels
  • Experience with systems implementation, resolving systems issues and partnering with outsourced technical teams and systems vendors.
  • Experience as a people manager, including coaching and developing professional Accounting / Finance staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment
  • Must be strong at multi-tasking, prioritizing, and have demonstrated expertise in proactively working on projects of wide scope and significant magnitude
  • Experience successfully working on projects with international aspects
  • Must be a creative and independent self-starter, while being a strong team player who acts with diplomacy at all times
  • Candidates must have the right to work in the US
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed (approx. 10%)

It’s a bonus if you bring:
  • CPA/MBA highly preferred
  • Knowledge of Intacct  and Adaptive applications as well as Concur Expense is a plus
  • Prior work in a non-profit or philanthropic environment is highly desirable
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite in Mac based platform
  • Direct lived experience of the issues we work on.

Salary: The salary range for this position will vary by geographic location to account for local job market & cost of living. Starting salaries within the range are based on job-related skills, experience and background. At HU, salary progression is based on performance and proficiency in a role over time.
